How to Style Platform Boots: 6 Goth Outfit Formulas
Platform boots change two things at once: they add height, and they add visual weight to the bottom of an outfit. Most styling advice only talks about the first. The second is the one that decides whether a look feels finished. A heavy sole can make a floor-length skirt look deliberate and grounded. With the wrong hemline, the same boot turns an outfit bottom-heavy.
This guide works from the boots up. First, the proportion rules that make platforms look intentional. Then six goth outfit formulas, from romantic lace to everyday wide-leg pants, each built with pieces from the CreepyGoth collection. You can copy them exactly or use them as a starting point.
The one rule: balance the sole
The chunkier and taller the platform, the more the rest of the outfit needs to answer it. You can do that in one of two ways: add volume or length above the boot (tiered skirts, maxi hems, wide pants, oversized layers), or lean into contrast (a short hem and sheer tights that make the boot the focal point). Trouble starts in between, when a slim, mid-length outfit sits on top of a very heavy sole with nothing to connect them.
Mini hemlines
Let the boot be the statement. A short skirt shows the whole boot, so keep the top half simpler and use hosiery as a bridge. Fishnets or patterned tights stop the gap between hem and boot from looking empty.
Midi hemlines
Midi lengths are the trickiest. Aim for a hem that either ends clearly above the top of the boot or overlaps it. A hem that stops just short of the boot shaft cuts the leg at an awkward point. Knee-high socks or tights help here too.

Maxi hemlines
Platforms and floor-length skirts suit each other. The extra height gives long, full skirts room to move, and a glimpse of a chunky sole under a ruffled or lace hem looks deliberate. Let the hem graze the top of the foot rather than pool on the floor. For more ways to wear long hems, see how to style a long black skirt.
Pants
Wide-leg or baggy pants worn over the boot let only the sole show. That gives you the height without the full statement, which makes it the easiest everyday option. Slim pants tucked into lace-up platforms do the opposite: the boot becomes the main event.
Six platform boots outfit formulas for goth looks
1. Romantic lace with sleek Chelsea platforms
A high-low lace dress already reveals the leg, so the boot will always be on show. Choose a clean, sleek platform that won't compete with the lace. A Chelsea-style platform ankle boot keeps the silhouette smooth, and patterned tights tie the dress and boot together without adding another statement piece.
The look:
2. Victorian silhouette: mermaid maxi and heeled lace-up platforms
A fitted mermaid skirt flares only at the hem, so it needs height to show off its shape. A heeled lace-up platform gives that lift, and its laces echo the lace-up detail on the skirt. Keep the top high-necked and lacy for a Victorian feel. When the weather turns, add a long hooded cloak; it keeps the long, narrow line from shoulder to hem. The look:
- Raven Brocade Gothic Maxi Lace Skirt
- Gothic Blouse Top
- Fifi Lace-Up Platform Boots
- For colder days: Gothic Hooded Cloak
3. Tiers and chains: chunky platforms with a ruffled maxi
This is the "add volume" rule at full strength. A tiered ruffle maxi has enough movement and bulk to balance a very chunky sole. The chains on the boots set the theme for the rest of the outfit. Pick up that hardware with a layered chain choker, and keep the top fitted (a mesh bodysuit works well) so the volume stays below the waist.
The look:
- Black Tiered Ruffle Maxi Skirt
- Black Mesh-Ruffle Mock-Neck Bodysuit
- Riff Chunky Platform Boots
- Gothic Layered Chain Choker
4. Night out: mini skirt, fishnets and statement hardware
For a club or concert, use the contrast approach instead. A short spiderweb mesh skirt and torn fishnet tights put the focus on the legs, and the boot becomes the loudest part of the outfit. Choose one with real attitude, like buckles, cutouts and chain. Then keep the top soft and simple, such as a sheer ruffled blouse, so the look reads as styled rather than costume.
The look:
- Black Spiderweb Mesh Mini Skirt
- Lace Blouse Top
- Torn Veil Fishnet Tights
- Black Chain Cutout Platform Ankle Boots
5. Everyday: wide-leg pants and buckled platforms
This is the easiest way to wear platforms on an ordinary day. Let wide, baggy pants fall over the boots so only the front of the sole shows. You keep the height and the heavy sole, and the outfit looks relaxed rather than dressed up. An oversized graphic hoodie keeps the proportions loose from top to bottom, and a buckled, chunky ankle platform suits the streetwear feel better than a heeled style.
The look:
- Black Gothic Baggy Pants (from our men's range)
- Gothic Oversized Black Hoodie
- Doing Damage Platform Boots
6. Soft doll: Mary Jane platforms, midi skirt and bows
Not every platform has to be a boot. Platform Mary Janes give you the lift with a lighter, sweeter silhouette, and they pair naturally with a midi skirt. To avoid the awkward midi gap, wear knee-high socks: the tops sit below the hem, so the leg reads as one line from skirt to shoe. A flared faux-leather midi keeps the look dark rather than cute.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Too many statement pieces at once. If the boots are loud (chains, cutouts, buckles), let them lead and keep the top quieter. Two or three competing focal points make an outfit look like a costume.
- The slim-midi-on-a-heavy-sole trap. A narrow mid-length skirt on a very chunky platform looks top-light. Add volume, go longer, or go shorter with tights.
- Ignoring texture. All-black outfits look richer with contrast: matte faux leather next to lace, mesh or brocade. Each outfit above mixes at least two textures.

Platform boots: frequently asked questions
What goes well with platform boots?
Almost anything, as long as the proportions balance the sole. Volume and length (maxi skirts, tiered ruffles, wide-leg pants) suit chunky platforms. Short hems work when you make the boot the focal point and add tights or fishnets. Midi skirts are easiest with knee-high socks or a hem that overlaps the boot.
Are platform boots still in style?
Goth style isn't driven by seasonal trends, so the more useful question is whether platforms suit the look you're building. For romantic, Victorian, club and everyday goth outfits, they add height and weight in a way few other shoes can. The styling is what keeps them looking current.
Why do people wear platform boots?
For height, and for the shape they give an outfit. A platform makes long skirts and wide pants look intentional, lengthens the leg line, and adds a strong, grounded base to dark, layered looks.
Can you wear platform boots every day?
Many people do, and it depends on the style and how you wear them. Lower, chunkier soles and wide-leg pants are the most practical everyday combination. For tips on breaking them in and walking in platforms, see Are Platform Boots Comfortable?
